Retro game nights in NYC: where to play 90's consoles

You grew up on the N64, the PlayStation or the Super Nintendo, and you want one night of that back. This is an honest guide to every way to do it in New York, including ours. We run Cafe 90's, so we will say plainly where the other options beat us.

The four options, compared

Arcade bars

Barcade, Wonderville

Arcade bars are the closest thing the city has today. You get cabinets, a drink and a loud room, and unlimited play at comparable retro bars runs about $10. What they are not is a couch: you stand at a cabinet, often alone, while your friends watch over your shoulder.

Modern play spaces

OS NYC, Sky Gaming Lounge

These are built around modern PCs and PlayStation, rented by the hour. They are good rooms if you want to play today's games seriously. They are the wrong room for Mario Kart 64 with three friends and one controller to pass around.

Renting a room

Peerspace and similar

Rentable game rooms start around $100 for 2 hours, and you bring your own everything: consoles, TVs, controllers, cables. The setup is the project nobody finishes, which is probably why you stopped hosting.

Staying home

Mini consoles, emulators

A mini console gets the games right and none of the rest of it. No couch full of friends, no one to blame for the GoldenEye loss, no reason to leave the apartment.

What a Cafe 90's Night is

A Night is one rented room in New York set up like a living room. Real 90's consoles on real TVs, couches, and four controllers at every station. A Ticket is $25 for about 3 hours of unlimited play with snacks included, and the flat price means nobody is counting your wallet through the evening.

The honest limits

We have no bar, no permanent room yet, and we run as pop-ups, so dates depend on which room we can get. If you want a drink in one hand while you play, an arcade bar is the better night out. If you want the couch, that is the one thing none of the others offer.

No Night is on the calendar yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. The Guest List hears about the first date first, and the first Nights stay small on purpose.
